DSP’s professional fighting game player history explained
A post from da forums:

I’ll try and tell as many as I can remember. One of the more well known ones (and one that Phil talks about alot) is his performance at Evolution 2005 and the aftermath (that Phil doesn’t talk about)
For some background, the Evolution Championship Series, known as EVO, is by far the biggest fighting game tournament. Finals day regularly breaks 130k viewers and goes up to 150k for certain games, while 80% of other tournaments struggle to get 5k viewers. Players from Japan and other countries that never travel to the states for any other tournament come out for EVO cause it’s THE tournament. It also has the largest payout for any FGC tournament, so it’s a pretty big deal. One of the games that was a mainstay back when Phil was playing competitively was Super Street Fighter II Turbo. It was also the only game that Phil could actually be considered a high level player at, despite him saying this for every old fighting game that he does online matches on. If you take a look at this:

You notice that DSP has never placed top 8 for any game in any year, besides one. In 2005, he got 4th in Super Turbo, how the fuck did that happen? For a number of reasons. Number one, the game was played using the PS1 port. They never used it again, and I’m not sure why they used it for this event. The game had numerous issues, such as there being a glitch for a character to throw two sonic booms (projectiles) at the same time, when in every other version he could only throw one. Controls also were unresponsive and unreliable, and in a game like Super Turbo when you could lose all your health with one missed input, it was a pretty big deal. This fucked over alot of players who were so used to either playing the arcade version or arcade perfect ports. It took alot of players out of their game. Number 2, Alex Valle, arguably the greatest USA ST player ever, couldn’t enter the tournament because of work. He knew that the port was terrible, but he was going to enter to “gatekeep” players like Phil and others to not make top 8 and get the payout. He couldn’t due to work, and that was that. Phil takes advantage of this, and get’s 4th, and never has anything close to this success again.
Now, you could say that DSP took advantage of a bad situation and capitalized, which he did. But Phil has repeatedly lied about this event and has made it look like he won the event.
- Hate Live Podcast (Episode 10 - 6/5/2014)
In this video at around the one hour mark, Phil starts to talk about EVO 2005 and says multiple times that he “won” the event. Not that he was the highest placing American (which he was), that he won the entire thing. It’s just another example of Phil’s lying, he knows that he didn’t win the event and he knows that he didn’t come any where close ever again. About a month after EVO 2005, there was a tournament called Texas Showdown 6 where they didn’t use the terrible PS1 port, and Alex Valle did enter this time.
Phil had an interview at this tourney:
Of course, cocky as hell. Said it doesn’t matter what version of the game it was, he’d still kick everyones ass. Tourney starts, and what happens?
1st John Choi
2nd Jason Cole
3rd Alex Valle
4th JumpSuitJesse
5th JeRon
5th Brian Tyson
7th DSP
7th Dreamfire
If I remember correctly, Valle sent DSP to losers bracket in this tournament too. After this, DSP fell off and was irrelevant until he decided to do youtube. Despite claiming to be a “former high level Marvel Vs Capcom 2 player”, he was never a threat at any point in the game. Street Fighter 3 3rd Strike was an even bigger joke, he was never even good at the game, much less “high level”.
Basically, Phil was never a threat in any game at any point in the FGC despite being a part of it for nearly a decade. The only game he was high level at was Super Turbo, and he was never close to being the best player in the US at any point, much less Japan. I follow alot of FGC personalities and players on twitter, I went to DSPs twitter and I only saw 3 people from the FGC that follow him (from the Followers You Know List), I follow at least 100 people probably. You’d think that for doing something for so long, he’d make at least some friends. The “King Of Hate” nickname originated from how he used to talk shit on a forum known as shoryuken.com (and of course never say anything in person) for hours on end. Even at his prime, Phil was never a high level player.
People hated Phil because of how much he ran his mouth. On Shoryuken.com, his signature from Evo 2k5 until the time he got banned and his account got deleted was “KING OF US ST”. This, despite the fact that he never before or after got close to his success at Evo 2k5 at any tournament. Phil was notorious for challenging people to money match him (Example: First to 10 wins gets $100 dollars, both players put up $50 and theres alot of sidebets) on there, talking shit for months, then when the time came Phil backed out. His reasons varied, they included “I don’t have the time for you” to “I thought you were bad at the game, now I know you’re legit”. This wasn’t just Super Turbo, it was Marvel Vs Capcom 2, 3rd Strike, anything Phil played. Everyone was a “fraud” and he was out to expose them. Then he had a change of heart at the tournament and bitched out.
I’m wondering why Phil is started to talk about his time in the FGC alot more recently. Maybe it’s due to Justin Wong winning Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 at EVO, his hate and jealously for him is boiling up again.
Couple of things:
1. Akuma is BANNED in Super Turbo, and was banned in under a year in HD Remix due to how broken he still was, despite the developers attempt to change him. A new school East Coast player known as Damdai (who raped Phil every time they played) won every tournament for the game with Akuma, and kept using him until he was finally banned. Phil knows fully well how broken Akuma is, but he’s bragging about it because he beat Justin Wong
2. Super Turbo isn’t even close to Justins main game. During this time, he was playing Marvel Vs Capcom 2 (his main game), Street Fighter 3 3rd Strike, Capcom Vs SNK 2, Super Turbo was an after thought. Despite this, he still managed to place top 8 at Evo 2k8 for ST (guess who didn’t?). The only videos of Phil beating Justin are in Super Turbo and HD Remix, where Justin just autopilots with Sagat.
The first point is the main reason why the description is a joke though. Akuma wasn’t banned at the time Phil picked him there, but he was still clearly the best character in the game.
Speaking of Damdai, the only reason the East Coast did support Phil at Evo 2k6 (he didn’t lie about that) was because the East Coast mainly didn’t play Super Turbo. They certainly didn’t “love him”. Marvel Vs Capcom 2 was the game to play on the East Coast and in arcades like Chinatown Fair, the crowds were crazy. Damdai didn’t come along until 2007, and when he did Phil was never heard from again. Damdai actually could beat foreign players, players from the West Coast, etc. He won Capcoms Street Fighter 25th anniversary tournament for the game, he’s legit. Here’s a video of Damdai giving Phil his own medicine:
